Well, sort of -- a documentary featuring us will be premiering on LOGO in March 2010! It's called The Butch Factor. Clearly, I'm not representing the namesake cause :) The film features interviews with a lot of beefy dudes, but also segments from Jackson, me, and my fabulously sissy friend Mark Snyder (who runs QueerToday and wrote for Beyond Masculinity). I have not yet seen the film (screenings keep eluding me), so I can't comment on the film's quality or how well it deals with the extremely tough subject of masculinity / gay men. Jackson and several other friends attended the film's world premier in San Francisco back in June, and reported that the audience loudly applauded my segment. Yay! Thanks, gays!
If you want to catch a screening before it premiers on television, it will be screening in the following cities in the coming weeks and months: Austin (Sept 12); Palm Springs (Sept 27); Atlanta (Oct 2-8); Tampa (Oct 8-18), Rochester (Oct 11); Washington, DC (Oct 15-24); Seattle (Oct 16-25); Pittsburgh (Oct 16-25); and finally, in the Czech Republic (Oct / Nov). You can find more details on the film's website!
Rochester on October 11th?! Well that means it's in ImageOUT (our queer film festival)---which hasn't even announced their line-up yet. My hubby, Jason, and I will be there and we'll lead the Trevor Hoppe cheering section at the Rochester premier!!
(It's too bad you have other plans that weekend or I'd invite you to come stay with us and see the film..and I'm sure the organizers of the fest, who are all friends and colleagues of mine, would love to have you...we could even do a community forum or panel or something in connection to the film!)
Yes it does mean ImageOUT! You'll have to let me know what you think! I'll be so close in Toronto that weekend, yet so far away!
Ironically, Jason and I got our copy of the ImageOut Screening program today! It doesn't actually get released to the public for a couple more weeks, but because we're members one of the perks is that they send you an advance copy of the program and you get to buy your tickets first.....Anyhow, there's a write up for this film in the program, obviously, but YOU got a whole paragraph in the film's write-up in the printed program! *smile*.....and I quote.....
"The film also profiles effeminate men who cope with homophobia. Trevor grew up as a happy-go-lucky child, only to encounter abuse from classmates by the time he reached middle school. Rather than give up and hide, Trevor forged a defiant, punk identity, because if he "slammed it in their face, everybody shut up." He now pursues an academic career, investigating homosexuality and masculinity."
.....aaah.....now Jason and I can say "we knew him when...." hehehehe
OMG! So fabulous and generous of them! Thanks for posting it :) xoxoxo
