Was anyone else watching Bravo tonight? Kathy was totally on fire. Tonight's episode of "My Life on the D-List" took the comedian's characteristic support of the gay community to a new level. Upset about the passage of Proposition 8 in California, Griffin explored a cross section of what's at stake in the debate over gay marriage. She discussed the rights and privileges associated with the institution of marriage, like healthcare. She visited the LA Gay & Lesbian Center and talked with gay homeless youth about the importance of remembering the queer past (e.g. Matthew Shepard) and fighting for civil equality. Kathy and "the gay youths," as she called them, proceeded to canvas door to door around Sacramento, giving a national audience a sample of the banal, often frustrating conversations that bring about social change.
Although the episode didn't teach me anything new (talking about gay marriage feels like beating a dead horse), the humor and accessibility Griffin brought to the discussion was both moving and entertaining. Girl is spot-on.
Through the magic of DVR we watched the episode last night. Entirely enjoyable (which is not a surprise since I'm generally a huge fan of Kathy anyway) and I do definitely love her idea of sharing queer history with queer youth. She has a pretty good interview over at Matthew's Place (on the Matthew Shephard Foundation website) where she talks more about that and about remembering Stonewall.
You're right, you do! We didn't have it until we bought our house 2 years ago and now I can't imagine how we lived without it!! Does that make me a bad person?! LOL
